The giant mud crab has a spindle-shaped carapace which is approximately 9-13 cm wide. The front margin has four tooth-like protrusions, while the anterolateral margin has nine, including those outside the eye sockets. The chelae are enlarged and are wide and thick on the palms. Among the four pairs of pereopods, the last pair are specialized and paddle-shaped. The giant mud crab inhabits mudflats near swamps, where these crabs dig burrows to hide. They are carnivorous and use their chelae to catch fish, shrimp, and shellfish.
The giant mud crab can sometimes be seen on the mudflats or drainages at the south of Gaomei Wetlands.
